Hello, Dear Reader!
Welcome to the second edition of The TRAPPO Town Gazette! My name’s Dustin and this week I feel like I need to provide a bit more of an introduction than I included in my first dispatch, so please bear with me for a few moments while I attempt to explain myself. I am the co-host and editor of a podcast called TRAPPO, which I started with my cousin Ky in the autumn of 2021. We had been creating what might be charitably called “podcasts” by some since 2010, but most of the stuff we released was practically unlistenable, and rightfully ignored.
TRAPPO was born out of an earlier podcast we created in the spring of 2020 called TRAPPO’s Chap House (a clever pun related to a much more famous podcast I refuse to name here), which we started recording during COVID-19 lockdowns, because, like so many others during this time, we suddenly found ourselves with a lot of extra time on our hands.
TRAPPO’s Chap House began as a series of conversations mostly related to the then-nascent pandemic, but we eventually decided that we wanted to try something with a little more structure, a podcast that gave us an excuse to chat each week about pop culture-related topics that we both enjoy. So in the summer of 2021, we recorded an extended conversation about a series of albums we each consider “essential”, and the rest is history.
That’s the short version of TRAPPO’s origin, a podcast that has now officially entered its fourth season, if you can believe it. Things have changed a bit here and there over the years, but we’re still doing the good work, choosing essential albums, finding cool new music and movies to discuss, unearthing obscure gems among the flotsam and jetsam of this twisted pop culture landscape to share with the world. We’ve gathered a very small but often vocal listener base that we appreciate very much, and we have no intentions of ending things any time soon.
If you’ve stumbled upon this Substack and had no idea TRAPPO was a podcast, allow me to welcome you to this bizarre little corner of the internet. If you’d like to listen to the show, you can check it out right here on Spotify for Podcasters, or you can find TRAPPO basically wherever you listen to your favorite podcasts. If you’re looking for more of a curated experience, here are a few tagged playlists you can peruse at your leisure, courtesy of the official TRAPPO blog.
The DANZIG Chronicles, Movie Reviews, New Music Showcase
We also host an annual music awards show that shines a spotlight on lesser-known artists who tend to be ignored by mainstream media which you can check out right here, as well as an ongoing series of fake broadcasts from non-existent radio station 66.6 KTRP which you can listen to right here.
My co-host Ky has essentially no online presence, so you’re pretty much stuck with me here and on social media, so if you’d like to follow TRAPPO on Threads, which is where I used to spend most of my time online, just click here and we can be pals. We’re also on Instagram and BlueSky, but I don’t post very often on those platforms for various reasons. I do still check in from time to time, so you can still follow TRAPPO there, too.
This week on TRAPPO, we’re discussing the double album Solace/Burden from Chicago prog-metal outift REZN, so make sure to check out that episode when it drops on Friday.
New Music Showcase!
Dark pop songstress Savannah Pope released her long-awaited sophomore album, Pandemonium, which she successfully Kickstarted back in 2022, on August 24, and it’s amazing. You can find her on Instagram right here and listen to everything she has to offer on Spotify right here. Below you’ll find the striking music video for her lead single, “Melancholic Goddess”.
That’s all for this week, Dear Reader. Thanks so much for your continued patronage of The TRAPPO Town Gazette, and don’t be afraid to tell me how you feel in a comment or a message. Are you enjoying the Gazette so far? What can I do to improve your experience? Is there anything you’d like me to discuss in a future edition? Let me know. Let’s get the conversation started!
